Start with your decking and fencing
—they take the brunt of the elements and may be in need of a tune-up. Check for any cracked or loose fence boards and visit your home improvement store for replacement boards.
Telltale signs of rotting wood include discolouration, mould or softness. Chip at these spots with a screwdriver; if any soft wood or dry rot is found, buy new pressure-treated lumber
and replace. Though this may be the year you want to build a new deck. Check with a local home improvement store and talk to an expert there for tips on how best to do it.
BEYOND THE DEK
While you are picking up lumber to fix those damaged boards, grab a little extra for other outdoor projects. Build those wooden planters or window boxes
you have always wanted. Why not make a project out of building a traditional wooden picnic table for your family to enjoy this summer, or even a playhouse or jungle gym for the kids?
THE GRASS IS GREENER
Before you know it, the grass will be green and high. So treat yourself to a new energy-efficient lawn mower
or service your existing one. If you use a push mower, get the blades sharpened. If you have an electric or gas-powered mower, oil the motor and moving parts. And if using electric, check the mower cord and extension cords for nicks and cuts and replace as necessary.
