VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Pass the time before your flight by ogling some colourful sea life at one of two airport aquariums. The satellite outposts of the Vancouver Aquarium include a 114,000-litre main tank brimming with 5,000 sea creatures, and an 1,800-litre jellyfish exhibit. YVR
To kick off or conclude your German adventure, grab a stein of beer at Airbräu, a traditional tavern with an outdoor beer garden (open May to October). In addition to house-brewed Bier, you can also try the buffet that’s bursting with Bavarian delicacies. In winter, the airport transforms an atrium between terminals 1 and 2 into a skating rink, surrounded by quaint food and gift stalls. MUC
HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Facing a long layover? Spend the time perfecting your game on the outdoor 9-hole regulation golf course, which is set among rolling hills with lovely vistas of Hong Kong. After working up a sweat on the links, head to one of two Traveler’s Lounges in the airport. The $50 admission fee will get you access to a hot shower, a bar and snacks. HKG
AMSTERDAM SCHIPHOL AIRPORT
If you didn’t see enough of the famed Rijksmuseum while visiting Amsterdam, you can pop into this satellite location, which is located past security and is free to passengers. This large museum features more than 8,000 works of art and showcases Dutch masters, including Jan Steen and Ferdinand Bol. If that wasn’t enough culture for you, you can curl up with a book at the airport’s own library, which is designed to feel like a Dutch living room. AMS
DUBAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Stock up on cosmetics, beverages, jewellery, clothing and virtually anything else at the world’s largest duty-free shop (58,000 square feet). If you can’t find it here, it probably doesn’t exist. After shopping, escape to the open-air gardens for some pre-flight sun and relaxation. DXB
SINGAPORE CHANGI AIRPORT
Be sure to pack your bathing suit in your carry-on so you can lap up luxury in the airport’s rooftop pool, complete with a swim-up bar! For adrenaline junkies, try The Slide@T3. The 12-metre slide is the tallest in Singapore and shoots passengers down four stories into the airport basement. Spend $10 at the airport to get a free ride. SIN
Get back to nature at the on-site nature preserve, located between the airport’s runways. Rent a bike or inline skates to tour the ranger-patrolled park. Keep an eye out for Swiss wildlife, including foxes, deer and rabbits. ZRH
