Some scammers send text messages to get you to reveal sensitive information or send you a link to a scam website. This is known as “smishing” (SMS phishing).
They may use scare tactics, pretend to be from a trusted authority, or even entice victims with offers like free gift cards or other limited-time deals.
If you receive a suspicious text message, contact the organization through official channels to verify that the message is real. Legitimate companies like the AIR MILES Reward Program will never ask for sensitive information via text.

Scammers call to trick you into revealing sensitive information, like banking details or passwords, and often use scare tactics to get you worried. This type of scam is known as “vishing” (voice phishing).
An example of a fake phone call would be “Your credit card was compromised. We need to verify your account details.”
Never share personal information over the phone unless you initiated the contact, even if they know a bit of info about you. When in doubt, hang up and call through an official channel.

Some websites are designed to mimic legitimate businesses and trick visitors into revealing sensitive information.
You can usually spot a fake website by looking at the URL in your web browser, but scammers are hoping you won’t notice. Learn how to protect yourself with tips from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
If know the site you want to visit, it’s best to type the address into your browser (e.g., airmiles.ca) instead of clicking on search engine results. You can also hover over links before clicking to see if they would send you somewhere suspicious.

Many scammers send emails trying to get people to click links, or reveal sensitive information. While these emails look legitimate, they are not.
Scammers will often use similar addresses to airmiles.ca, like “support@realairmiles.com” or “login@air-miles.net,” and hope you won’t notice the difference.
If an email asks you to click a link, always check the email address first. Then, look for other common signs like poor spelling or grammar, generic greetings (“Dear valued customer”), or urgent scare tactics (“Immediate action required!”).

Scammers sometimes manipulate search engines like Google to trick you into sharing account details or credit card information, using tactics like SEO poisoning and paid ads.
For example, if you search “Flights to Ottawa,” scammers may have paid Google to show their fake contact info higher in the results of that search phrase, or even similar words or phrases. They're waiting for victims to click a link or call a number to start their scam.
When trying to contact AIR MILES, use the official contact info in the AIR MILES app or type airmiles.ca directly into your browser’s address bar, then visit the Help Centre. Remember, AIR MILES Ambassadors will never ask for your PIN or password. If someone does, end the conversation immediately.

Multi-Factor Authentication, or MFA, improves security by requiring you to verify your identity in a variety of ways, such as a phone number, email, face ID, or through an authenticator app. These added layers of security make it much harder for scammers to access your accounts, even if they have your password. It’s slightly less convenient, but significantly more secure.
